A garden office is an inspiring place in which to work.

This is the view of Alex Johnson, author of Shedworking: The Alternative Workplace Revolution, who when speaking to the Scotsman, listed a number of notorious literary greats and inventors who have famously produced worked from their sheds.

These days, homeowners can go one step better than a shed and install a comfortable garden office in their back garden, but according to Johnson, the environment still increases productivity over a traditional workplace.

"Findings from BT report a 20 per cent increase in productivity when smarter working practices are introduced, despite what London's mayor Boris Johnson says about working from home as 'simply a euphemism for sloth, apathy, staring out of the window and random surfing of the internet'," he told the news provider.

He remarked that the composer Harrison Birtwistle spent his career working in garden offices, as did George Bernard Shaw, Roald Dahl and the artist Henry Moore.
