Abingdon school hopes for sensory garden revamp

Staff at a school in Oxfordshire are hoping to win a special competition in order to renovate a garden for their pupils.

Kingfisher School in Abingdon aims to provide a full education for children aged between two and 19 years old with severe and multiple learning difficulties.

The establishment has been entered into the Oxford Mail's Save Our Schools campaign, which is a partnership between the newspaper and construction firm Leadbitter.

Teaching assistant Sue Tucker explained that if the school wins a share of the £7,500 refurbishment fund, it will use the money to revamp its sensory garden.

"To have a makeover to our sensory garden would inspire our pupils," she told the Oxford Mail.

"It would help our pupils to be part of the London 2012 Olympics, with a garden that flows through the five different continents and a flame lighting up in each continent, encouraging our pupils to learn about the different countries as the flame makes its way to London."

Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society claimed this week that pupils at schools which encourage gardening can become more positive, confident and healthy.
