Garden design tips for Brits
» 25th February 2010 «
Brits redesigning their gardens should not forget to install electricity and water facilities if required, it has been claimed.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society, it could be beneficial to think about powering lights, the pond and any garden buildings before work commences.
The organisation advised gardeners to invest in an automatic watering system and outside tap and using a professional service rather than a DIY effort to install them.
Any garden buildings such as sheds and summer houses should be accessed by one path and stained the same colour, with dark green being a good choice as it gives the garden the illusion of being larger.
Octagonal buildings can be complemented with a similar-shaped pool or pond to reinforce the theme, the RHS added.
When choosing garden furniture, avoid white and vibrant colours as these distract the eye from the plants.
Meanwhile, Italian or Spanish terracotta pots and containers and those made from natural materials such as stone, wood and lead are the products of choice for the wise gardener.
In other news, the RHS has revealed that gardeners could soon gain access to a strain of blackcurrants that do not need a cold snap in winter to flourish in summer.
