Garden office buyers could benefit from DIY skills coaching

A leading DIY expert has called on some of the UK's biggest retailers to consider holding special skills classes for young adults looking to improve their properties.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, noted that DIY stores could be used to plug the generational gap that exists when it comes to jobs around the home such as erecting a garden office or log cabin.

"B&Q and Homebase, and organisations like that, perhaps ought to be holding evening classes for young householders so they can learn ways of improving their house without having to call in the experts," he said.

The comments follow a recent survey by Halifax Home Insurance which found that over half of young adults lack the fundamental skills to maintain their homes.

Indeed, sixty-three per cent of under-35s admitted that they would not even attempt to put up wallpaper, while 45 per cent said they would not put up shelves themselves.
