Garden office is the home improvement of choice
» 24th August 2010 «
Having an outdoor space such as a garden office is becoming the "home improvement of choice".
In an article in the Daily Telegraph, Caroline McGhie examined the increasing trend for homeowners needing a bit of extra space.
Speaking to high-end estate agent William Marsden-Smedley of Prime Purchase, he noted that buyers are putting outbuildings high on their priority list, suggesting that an outdoor space will also increase the saleability of a home.
His clients want "a home office, guest accommodation, or somewhere to store the vintage motorbike," he said.
One family featured in the article invested in a log cabin to provide space for their children.
"It was near enough so that if there was an emergency they could come and ask for a cooking ingredient they didn't have. I wouldn't see them for days. They slept there, made camp fires and cooked," said Jane Cook from County Durham.
According to McGhie, a Google Earth search reveals as many as 30 million outdoor buildings are in the UK's back gardens.
