Working in a summer house or garden office can offer homeowners a number of benefits, according to a new report published today (July 8th).

The Independent noted that the role of the shed has been undergoing a quiet revolution in recent years, with designs becoming more innovative and ostentatious.

As a result, this change has provided a "great inspiration" for working in garden buildings, not least because it completely removes the need for commuting.

"It's greener. It improves work-life balance. They even say it accelerates productivity. So there's little wonder that shedworking has progressed beyond the odd lucky soul who brushed out the spiders from the old garden hut," read one section of the report.

The newspaper also championed Alex Johnson's book 'Shedworking: The Alternative Workplace Revolution', highlighting the array of unique designs it depicts in its pages.

"Johnson offers a whistle-stop tour of famous sheds from Pliny the Younger's summer house and the composing retreats of 19th-century composers Grieg and Mahler to award-winning 21st-century fantasy writer Neil Gaiman's gazebo," added the report.

Earlier this week, Essex gardening fan Reg Miller was announced as the winner of Shed of the Year 2010 for his pirate-themed offering.
