Bringing UK clocks into line with that in existence across other European countries could stand to be of huge benefit to gardeners, it has been suggested.

Just days after the UK moved its clocks forward one hour to British summertime, Caroline Owen, president of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), wants another adjustment made.

According to Horticulture Week, she believes that changing to European timing could allow people to spend more time transforming their gardens in the evening.

Ms Owen said: "I would like them to be aligned to Europe so people get an extra hour at the end of the day."

Meanwhile, a HTA representative added: "Anything that makes daylight hours longer has got to be a good thing if it gives the opportunity for people to get out in their gardens in the evening."

Individuals who like nothing more than to appreciate their gardens after a hard day at work may want to focus on planting white or light-coloured flowers, according to an article in the Columbia Missourian.

Barbara Michael highlights that colours tend to look different as darkness sets in and lighter flowers are the most visible.
