Outdoor buildings such as greenhouses were the most popular home improvement item Britons bought last year in an attempt to boost the value of their homes through DIY, a new study reveals. 

Research from price comparison site Idealo.co.uk revealed that the interest in greenhouses lead to a 2,787 per cent rise in search visits this month compared to February 2010.

Interest in lamps and lighting went up 462 per cent, while DIY equipment such as tool boxes went up 2,750 per cent on the year before.

Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor at Build It magazine, commented on the findings: "As we approach spring, DIY and gardening sales are likely to increase. This is the time when people are starting their home and garden maintenance to get everything shipshape in time for the summer."

She also noted that homeowners will be planning any big upcoming jobs such as renovating a room now, researching the products they will need.

Consumers could also find that garden offices and log cabins are an attractive outdoor feature, allowing them to enjoy their garden and could add value to their property.
