Palm trees proving popular among staycation summer house fans
» 26th July 2010 «
Summer house owners and gardening fans are buying record numbers of palm trees in order to make up for missing out on exotic holidays.
Dobbies, the UK's second-largest garden centre chain, has sold a staggering 41,000 palms in the past 12 months, representing a year-on-year rise of 68 per cent.
Andy Smith, the company's plant buyer, explained that 'staycation' Britons are determined to recreate the Mediterranean in Milton Keynes and Caribbean in Coventry.
"We have put the sharp rise in sales of palms and other tropical plants and trees down to the number of people who do not have the money for an exotic holiday this summer," he said.
"They are really craving what they would see if they looked up from their hotel balcony in the south of France or St Lucia."
Mr Smith added that sales of other exotic plants, such as bourgainvillea and geraniums, have also proved popular this summer, particularly during the heatwaves.
Last week, garden office fans were informed by a Daily Mail report that having green space behind walls at their homes is a particularly appealing feature.
