Brits have been given a new incentive for looking after their garden after it emerged that they could lose out on thousands of pounds when selling their home if their green space is untidy.

Research from QVC showed that more than four in ten (45 per cent) of respondents would expect to pay at least £5,000 less for a property that had an untidy garden, Horticulture Week reported.

Furthermore, rental tenants would look for a £600 per year discount if their landlord left them with a messy green space.

QVC gardening presenter Richard Jackson told the news provider that there is no excuse for not maintaining your outdoor space.

"Simple and inexpensive maintenance and weeding plus the addition of a few colourful plants and flowers make all the difference and could save you thousands of pounds," he said.

Meanwhile, garden owners may wish to invest more time and money in their green space after it was predicted that the UK will enjoy its warmest summer in years during 2010.
