Gardeners should beware night frosts

» 14th May 2010 «

Garden owners believing they had seen the last of night frosts should think again, it has been suggested.

According to experts at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), there are still some damaging frosts lingering, which could even extend into June.

Such late cold snaps have not been recorded since the mid-90s, but growers have been warned to take precautions this year.

The RHS advised growers that frosts can also creep into unheated greenhouses, so it is not just outdoor plants that can be damaged.

Using horticultural fleece is a good way of protecting plants from the cold at night and particularly vulnerable specimens should have a double layer, just to make sure that they are tucked up warm at night.

Garden owners searching for inspiration could attend one of the RHS' summer shows this year, which include the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July
