Growing strawberries
» 9th June 2010 «
A US website has posted a number of handy hints on growing strawberries, which may be of use to British garden owners.
The News Tribune suggested that strawberries come in two main sets of varieties - those which produce one large harvest in late spring and those which yield a continuous stream of smaller fruits throughout the summer.
Choosing the spot to plant the strawberries is important as they need plenty of sunlight.
They will also benefit from being placed in a light soil that is well drained as these are the optimum conditions for such plants.
It is still not too late to get started with strawberry growing, as plants can be purchased from garden centres or nurseries and transplanted into the garden.
However, it is essential to keep on top of weeds through regular hoeing and applying a mulch to keep them at bay.
Meanwhile, BBC News recently reported that the government plans to protect gardens by changing regulations so that they are no longer classed as brownfield land.
