Historic log cabin should be used for education

» 22nd December 2009 «

A historic log cabin named the Hobby School and dating back to the 1700s should be used to educate children about the past, it has been claimed.

Originally thought to have been the one-room schoolhouse in which US president George Washington was educated, the log cabin is now located on Carter Street in Falmouth, Virginia, fredricksburg.com revealed.

Later proved not to have been the schoolhouse of Washington, the 13 by 22-ft structure was initially situated on the farm of the Jett family and may have been used as a kitchen or stable.

However, a University of Mary Washington professor emeritus W Brown Morton III explained that the building's history could be put to good use.

"There's nothing authentic about the cabin as far as Washington personally is concerned," he said, according to the online resource.

"But there is an old Italian saying about historic restorations like this: 'Even if it isn't true, it's awfully well done.'"

George Washington was the first in a line of 44 presidents that has current incumbent Barack Obama at the opposite end of the spectrum.
