Log cabin this year s answer to the spare room
» 21st February 2011 «
Log cabins and other outdoor buildings are this year's answer to the spare room, it has been suggested.
Writing for the Telegraph, Nicole Swengley highlighted the benefits of outdoor buildings over expensive extensions.
They are "cheaper, easier to install and with scope for entertaining, working, exercising or simply escaping into," she wrote.
Speaking to a couple, Jan and Nigel Brandon, who have a garden studio complete with insulation, double glazing and under-floor heating, the pair noted that an outside room allows one to be in the garden out of season.
"We eat here and have friends round for drinks. We listen to music, but decided not to have a television because we enjoy the peace," Ms Brandon remarked.
"It's very quiet when you close the doors and particularly nice when it's dark outside. My sons don't use it much – it's a 'grown-up' space - and we enjoy it every day."
The article did advise people thinking of purchasing a log cabin or garden office to check that they do not need planning permission.
