Property owners can change the style and feel of a room by making more out of their windows, it has been suggested.

Sam Tamlyn, operations manager at The California Shutter and Blind Company, observed that wooden shutters, such as the kind that are particularly popular in the Mediterranean, offer rooms light and temperature control, as well as being a durable option. Such options would also complement a stylish log cabin or summer house.

Elsewhere, the specialist suggested that design trends this season have seen both a return to country stylings and, in the opposite direction, a strong penchant for metallic furnishings.

Mr Tamyln argued that regardless of the options people choose, they should match the type of material used in the blinds to complement other features within a room.

"Darker walnut or jet black shades will offset beautifully against white-washed walls and tiles," added the expert.

"I'd advise always to look for the distinctive Forest Stewardship Council – this means that the wood has not damaged the environment."
