Brits who have built a log cabin in their garden this year and are now developing the surrounding landscape may wish to consider planting a tree within the next few weeks.

Running for 11 days from November 25th until December 6th, National Tree Week aims to encourage people to pay more attention to the largest plants in their garden.

Furthermore, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is encouraging its members to add their names to the list of people who have pledged to support BBC Tree O'Clock, which takes place on December 5th.

The event already has 250,000 people across 67 counties taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt to get the most people planting a tree on the one day.

Another useful online resource is the RHS' webspace, which contains tips on sourcing, buying and planting trees and other specimens.

The horticultural body recently launched a study into how different types of plants can alter the biodiversity of a garden by attracting or warding off insects.
