Massive bill looming for US log cabin restoration

A log cabin that is over 150 years old is set to be restored in the US, with predictions suggesting that almost $500,000 (£308,000) could be spent finishing the job, according to the Post-Tribune.

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs has already provided a $40,000 block grant for the upgrade to the historic Linden Log House, while other funding has also been gained.

Portage, a city within Indiana, was donated the structure by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 2007 and $10,000 has been spent to date moving the cabin.

If the Portage Park Department keeps up its aspirations of the renovation work then upcoming phases will include removing wood siding and trim, the building paper underneath the log cabin and lath material for investigation, the publication notes.

Meanwhile, it is also stated that grant writer Robert Murphy believes that the costs of restoring the cabin to its former glories could eventually total up to $471,000.

The Arizona Republic recently revealed that US log cabin owners could be faced with an increase in their rates as a result of the small print in a US Forest Service permit.
