May deadline for garden chemical disposal
» 8th April 2010 «
Brits planning to clear some space in their garden for a summer project will soon have to do so without one chemical.
The Pesticides Safety Directorate has ruled that UK growers must get rid of any stocks of sodium chlorate by May 10th.
Bayer Garden told Horticulture Week that retailers should be doing all they can to remind customers of the deadline.
Product manager Alison Mulvaney explained that it offers a real opportunity for garden centres to boost sales while helping gardeners avoid getting into trouble.
She told the news provider that retailers should erect signage, educate staff and create sales displays offering alternative substances.
Ms Mulvaney added that Bayer Garden expects sales of its own alternatives - Long Lasting Ground Clear, Tree Stump Killer and Super Strength Glyphosate - to increase in the weeks leading up to the deadline.
Meanwhile, those who are planning on starting a vegetable garden may be interested in the Royal Horticultural Society's new iPhone application.
