Scots encouraged to grow food in gardens

Homeowners in Scotland hoping to make the most of their green space have been encouraged to try growing fruit and vegetables.

Glasgow-based eatery Cookie is launching a scheme that will see gardeners able to trade their excess produce in the hope of encouraging more to take up the hobby.

"We also have a stand outside which we would like to fill with local produce to offer a truly alternative means of supply to our community," explained Domenico Del Priore - co-owner of the restaurant, deli and shop.

He said that the Urban Gardener Barter Food Exchange will see some of the food used in the business' kitchen and that it could be a great way for locals to reduce their carbon footprint.

Mr Del Priore added that Scottish gardeners benefit from having the climate to grow a range of tasty and fresh fruit and vegetables.

In other news, an experiment is underway in Wales into the benefits of mimicking a forest ecosystem when growing food, the Royal Horticultural Society has reported.ADNFCR-2848-ID-19689389-ADNFCR
