US city offers water discount for eco gardeners

A city in Washington, US, is encouraging garden owners to invest in green sprinkler systems to help save water during the dry summers.

KHQ.com reported that Spokane will give residents up to $375 off their water bills in exchange for them installing new or upgraded units that automatically sense how much hydration is required.

To qualify, new systems must have an evapotranspiration controller with either a rain sensor or soil moisture sensor.

However, existing units require a conservation controller, evapotranspiration controller and soil moisture sensor.

The idea behind the technology is that it automatically detects how much water is needed, meaning that exactly the right amount is used every time, helping plants and saving wastage.

According to the online resource, the city is keen to encourage everyone to take an active interest in saving water and has even put strict regulations in place for its own Water Department.

Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society has given UK gardeners some food for thought with its advice on what should be done in the greenhouse this month.
