Big investment into Gloucestershire garden attraction

» 2nd June 2010 «

A multi-million pound investment is set to allow a Gloucestershire attraction to continue to inspire garden lovers.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Batsford Arboretum is already considered to be one of the top sites of its kind in the country.

However, a £2 million investment will allow it to expand by three hectares and add more than 500 new species to its impressive ranks.

A new star attraction will be the Golden Vietnamese cypress Xanthocyparis vietnamensis, which is an endangered species that has just a handful of specimens left in the wild.

The national collection of Japanese Prunus will also be expanded, while the attraction's renowned Acer stocks will be swelled with a number of new cultivars.

The arboretum is widely respected for its Asian woodland plantings such as Magnolias, Acers and Prunus.

It seems with the new investment, more gardeners will be able to enjoy the site.

In other news, the RHS has revealed that scientists believe the English oak to be under threat from a new infection.
