Eco-village gets log cabin grant
» 21st December 2009 «
An eco-village has received a boost after securing a large grant to build a huge log cabin-style structure to act as its centrepiece.
Residents in Pembrokeshire's Preseli Hills project live in nine log cabins made from local timber and incorporating turf roofs for environmentally-friendly insulation.
The £350,000 grant is part of the £10 million Low Carbon Communities Challenge, which is spreading the funds around ten winners.
It will allow the village, organised by charity Lammas, to proceed with its plans to create a sustainable and carbon positive community.
Other initiatives include sourcing water, heat and electricity from the land, while the residents will consume food they have grown themselves.
"The community hub building will be a launch pad that will celebrate and promote the new opportunities that are available to create eco-smallholdings in the open countryside," said Lammas co-ordinator Paul Wimbush.
Meanwhile, Martine McCutcheon has told the Chester Chronicle that she intends to spend Christmas with boyfriend Jack McManus in a log cabin.
