A US horticulture expert has noticed that an increasing number of people are taking up growing their own food.

Spokane-based master gardener Pat Munts told the Spokesman that there has been a definite rise in the number of grow-your-own gardeners.

She revealed that many of the items she would normally buy from the shop have sold out as more and more people jump on the bandwagon.

However, rather than just being a finance-based decision, Ms Munts believes people have other motives for getting their green fingers dirty.

The expert suggested that people no longer want food that has been transported hundreds of miles and sprayed with chemicals to preserve it.

Instead, they want better-tasting fruit and vegetables that have come from their own garden.

The master gardener told the news provider that even those without their own green space could grow food by making use of community gardens or allotments.

In other news, the Royal Horticultural Society has revealed that it is trialling a big blue poppy called Meconopsis.
