Brits who are planning to build a log cabin in their garden may wish to consider planting one or more maple trees to add to the landscape and help with conservation.
While log cabins are generally not made from such wood, the popular trees have been put on a Red List, meaning they are in danger of becoming extinct.
Many UK gardens feature examples of the trees, but a recent Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and Flora & Fauna International study revealed that around a third of wild maple species are endangered, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) reported.
It is a result of encroaching agriculture and development in the trees' native China, with one extremely rare variety - the Acer yagbiense - having just four wild trees remaining.
Meanwhile, a tiny Scottish primrose called Primula scotica is also in decline due to changed grazing patterns, the RHS revealed.
