US log cabin obtains historic status
» 16th December 2009 «
A US log cabin first built in around 1935 has been officially inaugurated as a historic landmark.
The Florida log cabin is located at the Learning Gate Community School in Hillsborough County and was constructed of local cypress trees and limestone rock, the Carrollwood News & Tribune revealed.
It was originally located elsewhere and moved to the school in 2004 as a new development on Indian Mound Road threatened the historic building's future.
Built by former Florida state dairy inspector Alex Shaw, the log cabin had to meet certain criteria to be approved as a historic landmark.
This included being built from materials not commonly used by modern construction firms and reflecting the trends of the community from years gone by.
It will now become a library and history centre, a spokeswoman told the newspaper.
Meanwhile, Australian singer/songwriter Daniel Merriweather has explained how his New Year's resolutions for 2010 include building his own log cabin.
