Classic gardens in Burnham to be restored

» 6th July 2010 «

Historic gardens in Burnham-on-Sea are set to be restored after securing funding of more than £350,000, it has been confirmed.

Marine Cove Gardens were originally opened in 1927 but have suffered in recent years due to a combination of vandalism and a lack of full-time staff.

However, the project has now received a Heritage Lottery Fund injection of £344,200, with Burnham-on-Sea Town Council also contributing £14,500.

The restoration will include rebuilding the original lion's head fountain and pool, revamping the sunken gardens, sundial, cherub and flowerbeds, and recruiting a gardener.

Cllr Ann Bown, from the health and wellbeing team at Sedgemoor District Council, which will carry out the work from January 2011, admitted she is "over the moon" about the news.

"It just goes to show that with dogged determination and a long-term, well thought out plan, we can achieve many things with our partners," she said.

The central feature of Marine Cove Gardens, which are located on Burnham's Victorian esplanade, is an Art Deco-style fishpond.
