Create a "living roof" for a garden shed
» 17th March 2011 «
Garden shed owners with an eye for innovative design features might want to consider creating a "living roof" for their outdoor building.
In an article for Mountain Xpress, Susan Andrew claimed that there are plenty of benefits for those who modify structures - such as summer houses or garden offices - in this way.
"Besides looking pretty, living roofs offer numerous advantages, such as reducing storm runoff and providing habitat for plants and pollinators," she asserted.
Emilio Ancaya, a plant ecologist, said growing items on the roof may actually preserve the surface and that they might last for up to 50 years without the need for repairs.
This is because the soil and plant materials protect it from solar radiation, he explained.
Those who want to create an eco-friendly outdoor structure might consider purchasing solar panels, according to TV presenter and eco-campaigner James Strawbridge.
