Garden office owners given summer security warning

Summer house owners should be keeping their outbuildings as secure as possible because burglars are particularly active at this time of year.

That is the warning being issued today (July 28th) by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which revealed that 78,000 burglary claims were made last summer in the UK - the equivalent of 1,250 per working day.

As a result, the ABI has urged Britons to ensure that they do not give criminals an easy ride by failing to lock the windows and doors of their homes and garden offices.

"Everyone wants to relax in the sun, apart from burglars who are on the lookout for easy pickings," said Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI.

"Insurance can of course provide financial compensation, but it cannot compensate for the trauma of a burglary."

The ABI also issued a range of tips for garden shed security, including not leaving ladders and tools out overnight or when the accompanying property is not occupied.

Similar research conducted recently by M&S Money found that only 12 per cent of shed owners have the necessary security in place.
