Gardener excited about Olympic park design

» 19th July 2010 «

An amateur gardener has described her involvement in the new Olympic park garden in east London as "really incredible".

Rachel Read, from Colchester, has been working with the Olympic Delivery Authority since December after winning a competition to design the garden ahead of the 2012 Games.

The garden, which will be unveiled in 2011, will combine Ms Read's 'spiral garden' offering with the 'three rings garden' created by 11-year-old Hannah Clegg from Wiltshire.

"Although it isn't the actual garden that I planned, to have been involved in the process was great," said Ms Read in an interview with the BBC.

"The team of people that were there at the meetings and the workshops was just immense."

Ms Read added that her part in the creation of the garden, for which a final plan will be released next month, has opened up other "exciting" opportunities.

Meanwhile, garden designer Michelle Wake claimed recently that public parks are a perfect source of inspiration for gardeners who are lacking ideas for their summer houses.
