How to get started in the garden

» 3rd June 2010 «

Brits wishing to get their green fingers dirty for the first time this summer may be interested in the tips on a US website.

Gather.com canvassed its members asking for advice on how to get started in the garden and came up with a list of hints that may be useful to UK growers.

A good place to begin is by growing in pots - starting small and in a controlled environment limits the variables and allows a gardener to develop their skills.

Choosing a plant that interests you is important too and the online resource suggested growing a common food such as tomatoes, beans or peppers.

These can lead on to other foods and more complicated plants but the simplicity of growth makes them ideal starter species.

Although those who put in more work will get more rewards, it takes just a few minutes per day to stay on top of things such as weeding and watering.

Labelling what you have planted is also important as it helps keep track of what is growing and where.

In other news, the Royal Horticultural Society has revealed that a secret garden in Monmouth is being restored to its former glory.
