London unveils Olympic Park garden

» 23rd June 2010 «

The garden which will provide the centrepiece of London's Olympic Park for the 2012 Games is being unveiled today (June 23rd), the Evening Standard reports.

Last May, the Olympic Delivery Authority (LDA) and the Royal Horticultural Society called upon gardening enthusiasts to provide their suggestions for the development.

The result is a £5 million project focusing on a 'Perpetual Garden' inspired by the five Olympic rings, surrounded by garden staples such as bluebells and delphiniums.

In addition, a cinder track built around the middle point will lead to an oak tree planted in memory of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern format of the Games.

An ODA spokesman told the news provider: "The Great British Garden will be a much enjoyed addition to the park that is taking shape as a green backdrop for the Games themselves and a new great park' for London in legacy."

The concept for the garden - for which excavation work has now started next to the river Lea - was a combination of designs by under-16 competition entrants Rachel Read and Hannah Clegg.

London secured the 2012 Olympic Games after being selected ahead of rival cities such as Paris, Madrid, Moscow and New York.
