Summer house gardening still possible despite hosepipe ban

» 9th July 2010 «

Summer house owners in the north-west have received a boost after being told that they can still look after their plants despite the hosepipe ban.

Earlier this week, United Utilities confirmed that the temporary ban would be coming into force today (July 9th) as it attempts to preserve "essential supplies" of water in the region.

However, Kris Collins, gardening editor at Amateur Gardening Magazine, has offered a range of tips to ensure that homeowners can keep their gardens in tip-top shape.

He explained that crystals or gels are ideal for pots and hanging baskets if they are mixed with compost, as they expand when they come into contact with water and can hold it for up to two months.

Mr Collins also turned his attention to plants, noting that one species in particular could find favour among those with arrangements in their garden offices.

"Lavender is always a firm favourite with gardeners," he added. "But it is also one of the most drought-tolerant plants that you can put in the garden, so that is my top choice."

The hosepipe ban is the first to be enforced in the region for 14 years and follows the second-driest first half of a year in the UK for a century.
