Wine drinkers are improving their specialist knowledge and are now more likely to pursue their passion for plonk at home, it has been suggested.

Recent research from Mintel has found that more people in the US are opting to drink wine at home.

Indeed the study found that among alcohol drinkers, those surveyed consume almost twice the amount of drinks at home in an average month than they do in restaurants or bars.

Offering a UK perspective, Hatim Dungarwalla, managing director of lovethatwine.co.uk, confirmed that "it is absolutely true that people are becoming more and more inquisitive about wine".

Summer houses or log cabins could be the perfect way to entertain guests while enjoying a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. A recent article in the Express & Star showed that a couple were even able to host a wedding reception for over 200 people within the confines of a luxury home garden.

Commenting on the wine fad, Mr Dugarwella said: "The casual wine drinker now has a much more sophisticated understanding and palate than perhaps three to five years ago."
