Walled gardens are highly desirable, summer house fans are told

Summer house fans have been alerted to the appeal of having a garden which lies behind walls.

Walled gardens have long been the stuff of childhood fantasies, through classic tales such as Frances Hodgson Burnett's 'Secret Garden', according to a new Daily Mail report.

However, they can also be a treat for gardening enthusiasts, such as David and Lesley Roberts, who purchased Woodfall Cottage in Dumfries and Galloway in 1999.

"We had been looking to buy in the area and hadn't given any thought to what sort of garden we wanted," Ms Roberts told the newspaper.

"But when we saw the one here, it was clearly something very special. The garden can be entered only through an arched doorway and when you go through, light and colour open out in front of you."

The couple have since looked to share their 18th-century 'secret' with locals by opening it up to the public during the summer.

Meanwhile, the Guardian revealed earlier this week that gardeners have established a new ten-acre plot near Cardiff, known as the Riverside Market Garden, in an attempt to relocalise food production in the region.
