Garden fans set to be shown rare flower

Garden fans will this week be heading to London in their droves for the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) flagship event.

The Chelsea Flower Show is an internationally-recognised display of botany, which draws crowds from all over.

According to Horticulture Week, Hilliers Nurseries has chosen the event to showcase a rare plant known as Sinocalycalycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine'.

Described by managing director Andy McIndoe as being like Florida in bud form, the flower gets its name from its deep red coloured bloom which also has cream petals and a burgundy centre.

"It's very much a specialist nursery plant because the guy who raised them [Richard Hartlage of JC Raulston Arboretum in North Carolina] only gave it to friends, so that's how we got it, through Robert Hillier," he explained.

Horticulture expert James Anderson-Sinclair recently told the RHS website that he believes the M&G Garden is a "shoe-in" for the People's Choice award at the event.
