Garden organisation trying out poppy

The large blue poppy Meconopsis is being trialled by the UK's best-known gardening organisation.

Experts from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) will spend three years studying the plant before deciding whether to give it an Award of Garden Merit and recommend it for sale to the public.

Judging will be carried out by the RHS Rock Garden Plant Trial Assessment Panel and representatives from other organisations, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the Alpine Garden Society.

They will examine and compare 23 cultivars to establish the key differences between the various hybrids.

Most of the work will be carried out at the RHS' Garden Harlow Carr, but the poppies are also being grown at Garden Wisley in Surrey and Garden Rosemoor in Devon to help clarify the belief that they can only be grown in certain areas.

In other news, Wisley is set to host an open day on June 30th, which will see attendees shown how to grow carnations.
