Online garden retail taking off
» 11th May 2010 «
Garden and greenhouse enthusiasts around the UK have been using the internet to shop for the items they require.
According to Horticultural Week, the AMA Internet Garden Products Market UK 2010-2014 report showed that there has been a dramatic increase in online gardening sales in the past few years.
The study predicted that this trend would continue and that the industry could double in size by 2014.
One of the main reasons for the success of online garden retailers - which include specialists and non-specialists - is the rise in the number of UK households getting connected.
The report revealed that there was a 28 per cent increase in the number of homes with internet connections between 2006 and 2009, bringing the total to 70 per cent of the population.
It read: "The internet garden products market is estimated to be worth around £160 million at retail prices in 2009, a 28 per cent increase on the previous year."
Meanwhile, Horticulture Week currently has a special page dedicated to Wisteria, which may interest those considering planting the species.
