RHS creates new director of horticulture role

Garden enthusiasts may be interested to hear that the UK's top botanical body has created a new post.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is to appoint a director of horticulture, who will be responsible for overseeing the plant trials and plant committees, as well as the setting of new policies and management of horticultural standards.

As part of the restructuring, the organisation will say goodbye to Jill Cherry, who steps down from her post after four years.

Acting director general Gordon Seabright wished her well and thanked her for her contribution, which included playing a key role in initiatives such as the Glasshouse and Clore Learning Centre at Wisley and the Peter Buckley Learning Centre at Rosemoor.

"Jill initiated and has successfully overseen the introduction of master plans, which guide the future development of each of our gardens, and was responsible for major projects," he said.

The RHS operates a number of top garden attractions around the UK, including Wisley, Harlow Carr and Kew.
