Special events taking place at RHS Wisley

Brits who love the fragrant aroma of flowers in their garden may be interested in attending a pair of events taking place next month at a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) attraction.

Garden Wisley's Hillside Events Centre is set to host its open day on June 30th, with the focus very much on pinks and carnations.

Visitors will be given hints and tips on propagation and growing, with experts showing them how easy it can be to cultivate the flowers.

This will be followed up by two afternoon talks from RHS authorities.

Carnation and pinks sub-committee member Carolyn Whetman will give a chat on the careful breeding activities that are helping to secure the future of the plants.

After this, rock garden plant committee member Jim Jermyn will explain how to grow the "small but perfectly formed" alpine Dianthus.

Meanwhile, the British National Carnation Society Show will take place in the same venue on June 29th, meaning that visitors could attend both events within the space of two days.

In other news, the RHS has revealed that it has begun its first ever trial of the big blue poppy Meconopsis.
