Tips for container gardening

» 7th May 2010 «

Garden owners can add diversity and texture to their green space by using containers to supplement what they grow in the earth.

A US website has given a number of hints and tips on how to get the best out of plants growing in pots, which have slightly different requirements to those in the ground.

Due to the limitations of containers, watering can be a tricky concept to get the hang of, according to welovedc.com.

It explained that too much H2O can be just as damaging as too little, but that there is one way to judge what the plant needs.

Tapping the side of the pot will produce a sound - if it is hollow then the soil is dry, but if it is a dull thud then it is saturated.

Choosing the correct soil is also important and the online resource suggested that ProMix is a useful material to use.

Furthermore, adding a few polymer gels close to the bottom of the pot will save on watering in varieties which are known to be thirsty.

Growers looking for hints and tips could this month head to the Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in London, where experts will be on hand to give advice.
