Tips for spring gardening

» 23rd April 2010 «

Garden enthusiasts have been waiting many long and cold months to get back outside and get their hands dirty, but the time is finally here.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), now is a great time to start paying more attention to the yard.

With weather warming up, it is perfect for gardening, although growers should be wary of April showers and late cold snaps.

While seedlings, hardy annuals, new lawns and herbs can now be planted, it is important to protect fruit blossom from any lingering frosts.

Citrus plants will need a feed during the spring months and those with house or greenhouse plants should increase watering frequency.

Perhaps most important is to keep on top of weeding, as doing so will allow any new plants to establish themselves.

Those looking for particular species may be interested in the RHS' latest edition of its Plant Finder.
