Water workers to spot check homes during hosepipe ban

Water workers will conduct spot checks on the homes of north-west residents to ensure they are complying with the hosepipe ban, it has been confirmed.

Earlier this week, United Utilities announced that the temporary ban, which covers major cities Manchester and Liverpool, will come into force from tomorrow (July 9th).

The group has now announced that any summer house or garden office owner in the region who is caught persistently flouting the rules could be hit with a £1,000 fine.

"There will be a lot of staff out and about carrying out their daily duties who will be keeping an eye on things," a spokesman for United Utilities told the Sentinel.

"If it comes to their attention that someone is disobeying the hosepipe ban then they will receive a visit, or a letter in the post reminding them of the ban which is in place."

The ban, which is the first in the region for 14 years, is the result of just 300mm of rain falling in the past seven months, compared to the usual January to May average of 570mm.
