A couple from Tennessee has built a large log cabin to provide a lakeside retreat for their whole family.

Retirees Mike and Marta Foster have custom made a log cabin twice the size of the average outdoor building, on the shore of Old Hickory Lake in Gallatin.

The 4.5 acre site is surrounded by water on three sides and was designed by the Fosters' son-in-law, who is an architect, the Tennessean reported.

Ms Foster told the news provider: "Friends are starting to book up for summer. We want to share it with friends. It's such a special place."

When fully accommodated, the log cabin can sleep 22 people, with three bedrooms and an attached guest house.

Ms Foster added: "When you walk in, it feels like a big hug."

Last week, Malcolm Pinkerton, senior analyst at Verdict Research suggested that people are becoming more ethically aware, which is helping the gardening industry perform well.

This could lead some homeowners to set up log cabins and other garden buildings in an effort to become more environmentally-conscious.
