Dobbies, a UK-based garden centre chain, is encouraging a grow-your-own trend among homeowners this winter by giving a free seedling tree to customers who buy a Christmas tree.

The promotion comes amid an expected surge in demand for Christmas trees this year.

Speaking to Horticulture Week, Steve Taylor, plant manager at Dobbies Lasswade, said the chain was expecting to sell 25,000 real trees at its 26 centres this year.

"We are bracing ourselves for unprecedented demand from customers opting for the fresh variety this year," he commented.

Homeowners aiming to spruce up their gardens this winter could also choose to invest in a cosy log cabin or garden office. Mr Taylor said the Norway Spruce, Nordman Fir, Fraser Fir, Noble Fir and Lodgepole Pine will be among the Christmas trees available at Dobbies this year.

The news comes after the Manchester Evening News reported recently that traders in Manchester have been readying their "log cabin-style stalls" in preparation for the city's popular Christmas markets.
