Scottish homeowners are by far the most competent when it came to repairs and property improvements in the UK, new research has found.

A survey of 2,000 UK residents on behalf of the Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks revealed that a massive 85.5 per cent of Scottish residents have successfully completed DIY jobs without having to pay extra to put it right.

In contrast, Londoners were the least likely to undertake any DIY at all and also proved to be the worst at actually doing it with almost a third (30 per cent) admitting to botching some home improvement task in the last year.

The findings came as the banks estimated that almost five million households made a mess of at least some of the decorating, plastering, plumbing and gardening DIY jobs they undertook in the last twelve months.

Those homeowners wishing to set up a garden building like a log cabin or summer house can choose to have it professionally installed. According to the survey, almost 14 million households have employed a tradesman to complete work around the home over the last year.
