  • A homeowner has succeeded in turning his garden shed into a thriving music venue for a variety of big-name acts.

Jon Earl of Somerset, whose "day job" is running a photocopying business, has hosted 50 music sessions in a year after launching his Songs from the Shed project, the Guardian reported.

Mr Earl explained that the idea came to him following a discussion with friends over what to do with the shed.

After deciding to invite local musicians to come and play, he filmed the results on a basic camera and posted the results on YouTube, only to find that these shed sessions quickly became an online hit.

Mr Earl has since had requests from a huge range of prominent acts and has hosted such talent as Beautiful South member Dave Rotheray, the award-winning fiddle player Jackie Oates and the American folk rock group the Young Republic.

"I was astounded and it's taken over my life," he told the Guardian. "I think bands like the atmosphere and the idea of getting back to making music in a simple way."

  • While elderly people often keep their bodies and minds active by tending to their garden, one pensioner has taken on a larger task.

Despite battling Alzheimer's 84-year-old US citizen Bill Beussing is defying his age and helping his son-in-law to restore a log cabin using century-old oak logs, the Belleville News Democrat revealed.

While the wood might be older than him, Mr Beussing explained that he is determined to rebuild the log cabin on the property of his grandfather Henry Arnzen.

The timber was discovered two decades ago when Mr Arnzen's house had to be demolished due to a termite infestation.

According to the former bricklayer, the original log cabin was built in 1902, but covered up in 1917 when his grandfather built a new home.

Mr Beussing explained that he and his brothers dragged the logs to an empty building when they were discovered 20 years ago.

"There's nothing hard about it - it's all fun for me. But I was 20 years younger then," he told the newspaper.

Meanwhile, the Daily News Miner has revealed that Quartz Lake State Park in Alaska has installed a new log cabin for public use.

  • Homeowners may increasingly look to set up garden buildings like log cabins and summer houses as consumers become more environmentally-conscious.

Malcolm Pinkerton, senior analyst at Verdict Research, has argued that public interest in becoming more ethically aware is helping the gardening industry to perform "particularly well".

Indeed, he noted that the trend for homeowners to grow their own produce has become particularly popular and continues to gather pace.

He was speaking after figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) showed that the gardening sector saw increases last month against a weak snow-hit January 2010.

Mr Pinkerton added: "As non-specialist [retailers] enhance their ranges and enhance the products that they offer, that is actually broadening the appeal of gardening and making it more accessible to more people."

Earlier this week, meanwhile, The Evesham Journal revealed that the message behind this year's Spring Gardening Show at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire, will involve encouraging people to conserve the natural environment.ADNFCR-2848-ID-800400726-ADNFCR
  • Brits planning to revamp their garden in 2010 might be interested to hear of a website relaunch that may help them on their way.

Lovethegarden.com has been redesigned, with a number of tips for would-be gardeners from experts and other enthusiasts.

Whether it is advice on plant choice, inspiration for improving the garden, or detailed information on gardening products, the website aims to cater for all levels of horticulture lover.

With over one million hits per year, lovethegarden.com is a popular online resource where beginner gardeners can learn the basics of lawn care, growing their own fruit and vegetables and much more.

Users can also contribute advice themselves if they specialise or have had some experience in a certain area.

They also receive a monthly e-newsletter and can access online demonstrations of growing techniques to help improve their skills.

Relaunched today (February 15th), the website is now offering users the chance to win tickets to the Chelsea Flower Show.

The event is run by the Royal Horticultural Society, which also presides over the gardens at Key, Harlow Carr and Wisley.ADNFCR-2848-ID-19616293-ADNFCR
  • An upmarket hotel in London is offering couples the chance to enjoy a log cabin experience this Valentine's Day.

The Swissotel The Howard, which is located in the heart of the capital, said its Valentine's offers included romantic fondue dinners for two at its "Swiss Chalet" - an experience it described as a dinner with a "log cabin style".

Among the other themed events, which run from February 12th-14th, the hotel is inviting couples to enjoy a Valentine's Afternoon Tea in its Mauve Lounge & Bar which will see chocolate fondue served up in the shape of little hearts.

"All romantics will have the chance to impress their Valentine in a special way by inviting them to the 'Heart of London'," the hotel said.

Located at a riverside setting close to Covent Garden, the Swissotel The Howard London is a five-star hotel incorporating 189 hotel rooms and suites.
