  • Ronseal has teamed up with a psychology expert to establish the benefits of gardening on the mind.

According to the study's author Geoff Beattie, getting out into the garden, a park or other natural green space can have a positive effect on people's psyche.

The Manchester University professor also noted that around a quarter of Brits do not spend enough time outdoors.

He explained that looking after the garden can reduce stress and illicit a positive emotional response in people.

"Gardening itself is a good physical activity," the expert noted.

"In addition, it has got the desired characteristic of taking you out of yourself, caring and nurturing and thinking about something else and again, you are tending to spend prolonged periods of time in a natural environment."

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph has won the Best Show Garden award at the Chelsea Flower Show, which is taking place in London this week.ADNFCR-2848-ID-19797864-ADNFCR
  • Brits hoping to experience the traditional idea of spending Christmas in a log cabin covered in snow can now do so by heading to Lapland on a family break.

Sovereign.com is offering festive holidays to the Arctic country, where they can see real reindeer, stay in a luxury log cabin and meet Santa Claus before he heads off on his Christmas rounds.

The company explained that Lapland can be reached by a 3.5 hour flight from the UK and revealed its package holidays also include a husky sledge tour of "deep forests and past frozen lakes".

Furthermore, holidaymakers will get to enjoy a snowmobile excursion, with adults getting to drive their own, while kids ride with experienced instructors.

Prices start from £1,208 for grown-ups and £1,065 for children, but those who would rather invest the cash in a log cabin of their own could build one in their garden that could serve as a great place for enjoying both summer and winter seasons.

  • A rock band has explained why it decided to record its latest album in a log cabin in Somerset.

Leeds-based Cities Between Us said it chose to record the album at Wall Eden Farm's holiday lodges in East Huntspill after seeking a private retreat in the UK, thisissomerset.co.uk reported.

According to the website, after writing the album in Iceland, the band travelled to the Somerset site and rented two log cabins for a month, choosing to live in one and converting the other into their recording studio.

"It's been great - the vast contrast between us being intensely immersed in our music, and also enjoying the peace of the countryside, has generated a high level of energy throughout the album," said guitarist, Nimal Fernando.

It was reported that the band's first official album is due to be released this summer.

Earlier this week, meanwhile, the Hampshire Chronicle reported that a holiday company is aiming to build a log cabin "village" in local woodland.

Forest Holidays has submitted a new planning application to Winchester City Council for the project which would see 60 holiday log cabins built in Micheldever Woods.

  • A converted garden shed in the US has been commended for its innovative and environmentally-friendly features.

The shed in a San Francisco garden, which was turned into a painting studio by Scott Lewis Landscape Architecture, won an Honor Award at the American Society of Landscape Architects 2010 Professional awards, treehugger.com reported.

According to the website, the architects converted the shed into the "eye-catching" art studio by encasing it in an ivy-covered framework.

In addition, antique stone curbs from the previous garden were reused to form benches and steps in the revamped area.

Commenting on the makeover, the award judges said: "The project exhibits a very practical application of sustainable practices, including various water conservation measures and extensive adaptive re-use of existing materials, vegetation, and the garden pavilion, which has been transformed into a contemporary, sculptural, and useful sheltered space within the garden."

Earlier this week, meanwhile, Thomas Hoblyn of the Society of Garden Designers suggested that homeowners can keep their gardens looking pretty and attractive during the cold season by investing in winter-ready plants.

  • The "living" roof of a log cabin in Northumberland has become a haven for a variety of wildlife including a rare breed of goat, it has been revealed.

Nina Remnant, who owns the building and a surrounding 200-acre farm about eight miles from Rothbury, confirmed that birds, bees and other insects are attracted to the building's roof, though it has mainly become a goat pen.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, she said: "Just show a goat a ladder and it'll climb it. We always wanted a building with a turf roof that would blend with the landscape. Putting the goats up there makes everyone stop and blink."

It was reported that Ms Remnant and her husband Darren have turned the £500,000 log cabin, which was built this summer with the help of a rural development grant, into a coffee shop - appropriately named Goats on the Roof.

The goats were said to be Bagots - a breed classed as ''critically endangered'' by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust with only 100 breeding females in the country.
