Garden enthusiasts hoping to get their hands on something exclusive for their green space to give them the competitive edge on their neighbours have been spending a small fortune on rare bulbs.

According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), a number of specimens have changed hands for more than £100 on auction site eBay.

A single bulb of the white Galanthus reginae-olgae "Autumn Snow" was sold for £162 and is just one of a number of exclusive varieties that have encouraged horticulture fans to pay a high price for rare flowers.

Galanthus Gala organiser Joe Sharman told the RHS that demand for such specimens has being increasing over the past five years or so.

"It's been getting more and more intense - this year I sold out completely within four days, whereas last year it took me three weeks," he said.

The gala attracts around 300 people each year from across the UK and Europe and Mr Sharman explained that his nursery is amazed at the desire being shown by gardeners.

Meanwhile, the RHS recently announced the winners of its 2009 show season awards.   - 23 February 2010
