The 'grow your own' gardening trend is continuing to gather momentum despite industry experts predicting its downfall, a leading garden magazine has said.

Kris Collins of Amateur Gardening put this down to the stream of gardening shows and books available.

"They think that the popularity will wane over the next year or so and that it will go back to more formal gardening and people will go back to buying their vegetables from the shops but I don't believe that," Mr Collins said.

In addition, the specialist predicted that water features will become more important to gardeners.

"Going alongside grow your own there's also the sustainability and encouraging wild life into the garden so new ponds aren't perhaps as ornamental as they used to be," he said.

Homeowners looking to make their most of their gardens could also consider erecting a stylish summer house or log cabin. According to a recent survey by MORE TH>N, there has also been a recent re-surge in the popularity of the garden gnome – most notability among 18-24 year olds.
