More Summer Houses Articles Residents in Walthamstow Village are completing their last-minute preparations before looking to win a prestigious award for the second time in as many years.
The Waltham Forest Guardian reports that the village was successful in the 'Best Urban Community' category at the London in Bloom event last year, which was the first time it had entered.
Fast-forward 12 months and it is in contention to take the national title in the Royal Horticulture Society contest, where the village will be judged in terms of community participation, sustainability and horticultural expertise.
Helen Lerner, chair of Walthamstow Village Residents' Association (WRVA) environment committee and Walthamstow Village in Bloom, told the publication that gardening was a good way of bringing residents together.
She said: "People of all ages help to improve the area and it is a good thing for everybody. Doing it empowers the community.
"We didn't go into it for the competition. We were already doing this, so thought we might as well enter."
Some 67 towns, cities and villages across the UK have been named as finalists for the 2010 instalment of Britain in Bloom. -
