Britons looking to spend more time in their garden

The majority of UK gardeners have suggested that they would like to spend more time in their gardens in 2010, according to new research released today (February 5th).

A Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) report, commissioned by Ipsos-Mori, found that 67 per cent are planning to work harder on their gardens this year, compared with 60 per cent ten years ago.

In addition, the study noted that the average time Britons spend gardening during the main season has increased over the past four years to 3.9 hours per week.

"With more people interested in gardening, grow your own and green issues, the challenge will be to produce an inspiring and informative offer to capture their interest now and for the years to come," said Andrew Maxted, director of marketing at the HTA.

The research also revealed that industry-wide sales increased by five per cent on a year-on-year basis in December 2009.

Earlier this month, the Associated Press revealed that US first lady Michelle Obama is adopting a 'grow your own' policy for the White House garden.ADNFCR-2848-ID-19601131-ADNFCR
